Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
